From June 19 to 28, 2024, the 67th session of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space is being held in Vienna (Republic of Austria), which is attended by representatives of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Belarus to International Organizations in Vienna.
On June 19, 2024, Ivan Bucha, Deputy Head of the Department of Space Activities of the Apparatus of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, made a statement on agenda item 5 from the Republic of Belarus. He noted that space activities in Belarus are carried out for peaceful purposes and are aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations.
"Space activity is an area of concentration of the latest achievements of mankind, the pinnacle of scientific and technological progress, makes a significant contribution to the development of science and technology, economics and culture, and the informatization of society. Belarus is one of the countries with a high level of scientific and technological development. Space research is one of our main national priorities. Along with the existing competencies in the field of remote sensing of the Earth, space instrumentation, electronic component base, new materials for space applications, Belarus has opened a new direction of space research – manned cosmonautics," Ivan Bucha stressed.
The representative of the NAS of Belarus stated that a joint Belarus-Russia project has been implemented on the space flight of a Belarusian citizen to the Russian segment of the International Space Station for research purposes. Cosmonaut of the Republic of Belarus Marina Vasilevskaya made a space flight as part of the crew of the 21st expedition to the ISS. The crew commander is Russian cosmonaut Oleg Novitsky, and the flight engineer is American astronaut Tracy Dyson. The backup crew also included cosmonauts from the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation, as well as an astronaut from the United States of America.
"The Belarusian cosmonaut has completed a scientific program on the ISS, consisting of 7 targeted works. The implementation of a joint Belarus-Russia project on the space flight of a Belarusian cosmonaut to the Russian segment of the ISS was carried out by the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Roscosmos State Corporation," Ivan Bucha noted.
The Deputy Head of the Department of Space Activities of the Apparatus of the NAS of Belarus expressed gratitude to the participating States of the ISS project for the opportunity to visit the International Space Station by a Belarusian cosmonaut. And he noted that the implementation of the international project on the space flight of a Belarusian cosmonaut to the ISS once again testifies to the unifying role of space.
Belarus became a member of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space in 2014.
