Official meeting of polar explorers participating in the 16th BAE held at the NAS of Belarus

On July 5, 2024, the NAS of Belarus hosted an official meeting of the participants of the 16th Belarusian Antarctic Expedition. The Academy of Sciences brought together participants of the 16th Belarusian Antarctic Expedition, Belarusian Antarctic expeditions of different years; employees of organizations of the Departments of Biological Sciences, Physics, Mathematics and Informatics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences of the NAS of Belarus participating in Antarctic topics; heads of scientific organizations of the NAS of Belarus, young scientists. Vladimir Gusakov, Chairman of the Presidium of the NAS of Belarus, made a welcoming speech. "This expedition has become the longest since Belarus began conducting research in Antarctica. We are already approaching a year-round stay. Although it is not necessary to make such a decision from the coming season yet, it is premature. Nevertheless, we must constantly be ready for this, if necessary," Vladimir Grigorievich said. The head of the 16th Belarusian Antarctic Expedition, Alexey Gaidashov, shared the results of the expedition, told about the peculiarities of work in this field season. As Alexey Alexandrovich noted, unique materials have been collected in Antarctica, which scientists will have to work with in the future. They will arrive by ship soon.

During the work in Antarctica, the construction of facilities of the Belarusian Antarctic Station in the area of Viacherniaja Mountain has continued, dozens of scientific studies and experiments have been carried out, thousands of scientific measurements of natural parameters have been performed. Scientific research was carried out on integrated terrestrial and satellite monitoring of the atmosphere and the underlying surface in Antarctica; hydrochemical, biological, environmental studies of terrestrial, marine and freshwater ecosystems of Antarctica; monitoring of the ozone layer of the atmosphere and UV radiation in Antarctica; study of the changes in the natural environment and climate of Enderby Land, East Antarctica and adjacent territories.

A multi-day scientific trip was carried out to a remote unexplored area of the Antarctic mainland with the Nai mountain range located on it and a chain of other mountain ranges adjacent to it with a total area of about 35 thousand sq. km.

New scientific facilities have been put into operation, including: a meteorological station for year-round automatic receipt of basic meteorological parameters from the location of the BAS, a new meteorological bureau, a scientific permanent establishment for the placement of Earth magnetic field measuring devices.

At the end of the meeting, Chairman of the Presidium of the NAS of Belarus Vladimir Gusakov presented awards and gifts to the members of the expedition.
A photo exhibition was also shown in the hall of the second floor, and during the meeting a short film about the work of the 16th BAE was shown.

On October 30, 2023, the 16th Belarusian Antarctic Expedition was officially launched at the NAS of Belarus. 13 people went to Antarctica under the guidance of an experienced polar explorer Alexei Gaidashov. The expedition includes researchers from the NAS of Belarus (Republican Centre for Polar Research, Scientific and Practical Centre of the NAS of Belarus on Bioresources, Institute for Environmental Management, Institute of Physics), BSU, Brest Regional Clinical Hospital, and other organizations of the country.
