On September 18–20, 2024, the 37th meeting of the Council of the International Association of the Academies of Sciences (IAAS) was held in Moscow, on the basis of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It was attended by the presidents and representatives of the leadership of the National Academies of Sciences of Russia, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, China, Cuba, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Montenegro, Lomonosov Moscow State University, the Kurchatov Institute (Russia), the University of Postgraduate Education of the Vietnamese Academy of Sciences and Technologies, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Russia), the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and other leading world scientific centres.
On September 19, 2024, the opening ceremony of the 37th meeting of the IAAS Council took place. Academician Uladzimir Gusakow, Head of the IAAS, Chairman of the Presidium of the NAS of Belarus, made a report on the Development of the IAAS as a Form of Interacademic Cooperation in the Modern World. As Uladzimir Gusakow noted in his report, from the first years of the IAAS operation, the main activities have been to facilitate the efforts of IAAS member organizations, state and interstate bodies in addressing issues of preserving and developing national scientific and technological spaces, promoting closer cooperation between national academies of sciences and higher education. Speaking about the tasks facing the IAAS, Uladzimir Gusakow noted: "Science has a global character, at the same time, more and more often certain restrictions are introduced in the framework of competition in the world. The IAAS, which unites the largest scientific centres, cannot stay away from these processes. This is the main idea of IAAS – we must be together in order to rise to a new level by joint efforts, supporting each other."
The Council of the International Association of the Academies of Sciences (IAAS) at its 37th meeting elected 22 new IAAS academicians. Among the new academicians are Siargiej Chyzhyk, First Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the NAS of Belarus, Oĺga Vasiĺeva, President of the Russian Academy of Education, Vladimir Kvardakov, Chairman of the Council of the Russian Centre for Scientific Information, Oleg Narajkin, Vice President of the Kurchatov Institute.
The IAAS Council adopted the final document A New Concept of Cooperation and Development of the International Association of the Academies of Sciences.
On September 20, 2024, meetings of the scientific Councils of the International Association of the Academies of Sciences were held. The Deputy Head of the IAAS, Academician of the IAAS Piotr Vitsiaź, made an overview report on the work of the scientific councils of the IAAS. He expressed gratitude to the Shandong Academy of Sciences (PRC) for the fact that the second congress of scientific councils will be held next year on their territory.
As part of the 37th meeting of the Council of the International Association of the Academies of Sciences, a meeting of the Council of Young Scientists of the IAAS was held on September 18, 2024. Chairman of the Council of Young Scientists of the NAS of Belarus Stanislaw Juretski presented the results of the work of the CYS of the NAS of Belarus. Ganna Karpienka, Scientific Secretary of CYS of the IAAS, Scientific Secretary of CYS of the NAS of Belarus, reported on the plans and prospects of CYS of the IAAS for 2025 and beyond. Nikita Marchenkov, acting Head of the Kurchatov Synchrotron-Neutron Research Complex at the Kurchatov Institute, was elected the new chairman of the Council of Young Scientists of IAAS. His predecessor in this post was the Minister of Education of the Republic of Belarus Andrej Ivaniets, whose term of office has expired. The number of CYS of the IAAS co-chairs has been increased from two to three. Since Marchenkov was the co-chairman, two new ones were elected: Stanislaw Juretski, Chairman of the Council of Young Scientists of the NAS of Belarus, and Vladislav Rozhkov, Chairman of the Association of Young Scientists and Specialists of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR). The expert of the NAS of Armenia Gevorg Vardanian remains the co-chairman.
It was decided to hold the next meeting in Minsk in 2025.
For reference: The International Association of the Academies of Sciences (IAAS) unites 27 organizations (academies of sciences of the CIS and other countries, universities, large scientific centres from the Caribbean to Asia). Since 2017, the functions of the basic Academy of Sciences in the organizational and methodological support of the IAAS have been performed by the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, and the head of the IAAS is the Chairman of the Presidium of the NAS of Belarus, Academician Uladzimir R. Gusakow. The highest governing body of the IAAS is the Council of the IAAS.
