We cherish the memory of outstanding scientists: Alexander Ilyushchenko and Alexander Mikhalevich have passed away
The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus has suffered a grave, irreparable loss. In just a few days—August 30 and September 1, 2026—Belarusian science lost two academicians: distinguished scientists Alexander Mikhalevich and Alexander Ilyushchenko.
Alexander Mikhalevich was born in Vitebsk. He graduated from Belarusian Polytechnic Institute, becoming a specialist in thermal physics, general and nuclear energy, and energy conservation. He rose through the ranks from researcher to academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, serving as the scientific director of the Institute of Energy of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and heading the Joint Institute for Power and Nuclear Research "Sosny."
Alexander Ilyushchenko was born in Minsk. He graduated from Belarusian Polytechnic Institute and dedicated his life to the development of powder metallurgy. He rose from a common engineer to the head of a major research and production association. He is a well-known scientist in powder metallurgy and materials science, having made significant contributions to the creation and industrial development of new materials and technologies, the theory and technology of forming thermal spray coatings, the synthesis of composite materials, and the chemical-thermal treatment of metals and alloys with coatings.
Their bright memories will live on in their scientific achievements and in our hearts. The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus expresses its deepest condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of Alexander Mikhalevich and Alexander Ilyushchenko.
