Election of new full members (academicians) and corresponding members of National Academy of Sciences of Belarus held

The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus summed up the results of the election of new full members (academicians) and corresponding members. The election was held at the session of the NASB General Meeting on November 16, 2017. Among the applicants there were 29 and 104 candidates who applied for academicians and corresponding members vacancies respectively.

The biggest competition, namely nine people per seat, was among the candidates for the academician title in the Materials Science specialty. The highest number of candidates for the corresponding member title (ten people per seat) was in Mechanical Engineering specialty.

As a result of a secret ballot, 5 full members (academicians) and 22 corresponding members were elected.

Alexander Kilchevsky, Chief Scientific Secretary of the NAS of Belarus; Ivan Golub, Director of the NASB Institute of Flax; Alexander Lukashanets, First Deputy Director for Research of the NASB Center for the Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature Research; Vladimir Kulchitsky, Deputy Director for Research of the NASB Institute of Physiology; Alexander Beletsky, Director of the Republican Scientific and Practical Centre for Traumatology and Orthopedics, were elected academicians. The average age of the newly elected academicians is 64 years. Eroma Urban, Deputy Director General for Research of the NASB Scientific and Practical Center for Arable Farming; Igor Marzalyuk, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Education, Culture and Science of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus; a number of medical scientists, including Nikolay Serdyuchenko, Academician-Secretary of the NASB Department of Medical Sciences; Gennady Gurevich, Director of the Republican Scientific and Practical Centre of Pulmonology and Tuberculosis; Oleg Rummo, Head of the Republican Scientific and Practical Center of Organ and Tissue Transplantation; and others were elected corresponding members. The average age of the newly elected corresponding members is 57 years.

Election of academicians and corresponding members of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus is held once every 2.5-3 years within the available vacancies in specialties approved by the NASB Presidium.

On 16 November 2017, a session of the General Meeting of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus was held. About 500 participants, including representatives of the Academy of Science, university and branch science, members of the NASB Presidium, senior officials, representatives of the national government bodies, leading Belarusian scientists, took part in its work. The session agenda included the election of full members (academicians), corresponding members, and foreign members of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. List of new full members (academicians) and corresponding members
