Historians from the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus took part in a Minsk – Moscow video link "Operation Bagration. On the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Minsk" held in the Sputnik Belarus multimedia press center on 2 July 2019.
Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Alexander Kovalenya spoke about guerrilla forces contributed in Belarus’ liberation from Nazi invaders. “Talking about four fronts, I would also like to mention the fifth, internal guerrilla and underground front, contributed to the strategic decision of Operation Bagration,” Alexander Kovalenya said. He noted that in fact 60% of Belarus’ territory was liberated by guerrilla groups and brigades. According to Alexander Kovalenya, it is very important to remember soldiers-liberators. “There are 8.5 thousand monuments to soldiers-liberators in Belarus. Today it is very important for us to remember those who gave their lives on the altar of freedom,” he said.
Anatoly Krivorot, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Leading Researcher of the Department of Military History at the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, shared information about the cooperation of the guerrillas with the Red Army troops. “Guerrillas in cooperation with the Red Army liberated about 30 district centers. These were not certainly spontaneous actions. Guerrillas’ and Red Army troops’ interaction was planned by the Belarusian headquarters of the partisan movement and approved by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Belarus,” Anatoly Krivorot said.
