Effect of Mn2+ cations on accumulation of early porphyrin precursors of chlorophyll in barley seedlings. pp. 25--29
Summary: Inhibition of chlorophyll (Chl) synthesis and accumulation of Chl precursors such as protoporphyrin IX (PP) and monomethyl ester of Mg-protoporphyrin IX (MgPE) were observed in greening barley leaves incubated with Mn2+ cations for 6 h of illumination. In the dark Mn2+ cations as inductors of porphyrinogenesis were not effective. The optimal conditions for MgPE accumulation were incubation of 9-day-old etiolated barley leaves with 10 mM Mn2+ solution for 4 h by light (15 W/m2) and greatly differed from the optimal conditions for PP accumulation. Along with this the maximum amounts of MgPE accumulated under the influence of Mn2+ cations were twice as the maximum levels of PP. Induced with Mn2+ cations porphyrinogenesis was fully reversible in the presence of the active iron cations (Fe2+). The results are discussed from the position of Mn2+ cations involvement in Fe2+ metabolism and the influence on the Fe- and Mg-branches of the tetrapyrrole biosynthesis activities.

The pattern of displaying tecessive allele of atrophic rhinitis (AR) at different methods of pig breeding. pp. 46--51
Summary: Experimental study of pigs has revealed their hereditary predisposition to AR. Change in the genetic population under constant elimination of the allele r resulted in a decrease in its frequency q that affected an increase in the frequency P of the allele R. Allele redistribution is an outcome of the selection directed at elimination of the allele r. Selection had an effect on genotype distribution. At first the number of homozygous RR decreased and by the end of improving head of livestock from a health point of view their number increased. The portion of heterozygous Rr individuals and recessive ones was appreciably reduced. Genetic principles of pig breeding proved to be more effective in AR control, during improving -- selection.

Development of morphological characters in induced wheat haploids. pp. 56--59
Summary: A comparative analysis of stem, leaf and ear development characters of four wheat species and their androclinic haploid analogues has shown that ambiquous reduction in plant habitus takes place during depolyploidization. The characters of vegetative organs change stronger than numerical and linear parameters of the ear. Reduction in a chromosome set can result in a decrease in interspecific differences between durum and common wheat. The character variability is largerly defined by the chromosome set change, genetic nature of varieties and by genotype -- chromosome set factor interaction.

Sublytic effects of photosensitized responses in erythrocytes. pp. 65--69
Summary: The effect of photosensitized reactivus on the processes of erythrocyte aging was studied. Light in the presence of hematoporphyrin was shown to induce changes of different directions in vesiculation degree of erythrocytes at 24 and 48 hours of incubation. The effects revealed were explained by the membrane structural rearrangements induced by the products of the photosensitized responses. The existence of membrane structural rearrangements which did not lead to cell lysis was proved by the data on detergent and osmotic resistance of cells, kinetic parameter KM of acetylcholinesterase and on the state of membrane-bound hemoglobin.

Binding of acetaldehyde with erythrocytes and activity of alcohol- and aldehyde dehydrogenase of monkey blood serum after ethanol withdrawal. pp. 70--72
Summary: This study was pursued in rhesus macaques of two age groups (5-8-year-old). These monkeys consumed a 10% ethanol solution as their single source of drinking fluid for 3 years. There were 17 intact monkeys in the control group. Blood was taken from a vein before withdrawal and following 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours after AWS had developed. On the last day of intoxication and withdrawal blood serum ADH, ALDH and binding of acetaldehyde (AA) were studied. After alcohol withdrawal chronically intoxicated monkeys showed changed states of erythrocyte membranes and signs of alcohol pathology of liver. This was manifested by a decreased binding of AA, elevated ADH activity and reduced activity of ALDH in blood serum.

Nuclein-protein changes in rat testes under gamma-radiation with 1.0 Gy dose of a different rate. pp. 77--81
Summary: The total number of germ cells and their particular types, the content of the nucleic acids and crude protein were studied in rat testes one day after acute (dose rate 5.40 cGy/min) and long-term continuous gamma-irradiation (dose rate 1.80 and 5.76 cGy/day) at 1.0 Gy dose. No changes in the parameters studied were observed at the initial period after 1.0 Gy irradiation. An increase in the DNA content and a decrease in acid-soluble fraction of the nucleic acids against a background of reduction in the number of some types of spermatogenic cells (mainly spermatogonia) were observed with an increase in a dose rate. At the same time these changes in the indices were riot observed at the minimum dose rate irradiation.

Immunophenotyping of peripheral blood lymphocytes in children and adolescents with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. pp. 93--100
Summary: Two-color immunophenotyping of lymphocyte subsets using a lysed whole blood method was performed in 46 children and adolescents with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) from contaminated areas and in 18 children with HT from "clean" areas of Belarus. 46 healthy children of matched age and sex distribution were used as control group. Analysis of lymphocyte subsets in chidren with HT living in contaminated areas showed a considerable decrease in the levels of total lymphocytes, CD8+ T cells (T-suppressors), total B cells, and CD5+ B cells together with an activation of NK and CD56+, CD8+CD57+ T cells (T-killers not restricted by HLA antigens). The study of cellular immunity in children with different doses of incorporated radionuclides revealed that prolonged influence of very small doses of ionizing radiation resulted in significant changes in lymphocyte subsets; interestingly, B cell subsets were the first to react to such influence while stability of T-killers and NK was the highest. These changes were the greatest in children with HT with the highest dose of incorporated radionuclides. Significant correlation between the levels of main lymphocyte subsets and the doses of accumulated radionuclides observed in this study also indicated that their relation was dose-dependent. The results of the study suggest that 1) lymphocyte subsets are different in their reaction to chronic internal irradiation which, evidently, is determined by their proliferation activity, degree of differentiation, and function; 2) increase in the dose of incorporated radionuclides in children and adolescents with HT leads to different reaction of cells- a decrease in T-suppressors, B cells and activation of cells responsible for nonspecific cytotoxicity- T-killers unrestricted by HLA antigens and NK; 3) children and adolescents with HT from contaminated areas have much more pronounced imbalance of cellular immunity and activation of cellular cytotoxic reactions damaging the thyroid tissue than those with HT from "pure" areas.

g-Subunit of nerve growth factor modulates epidermal growth factorstimulated proliferation of L929 fibroblasts. pp. 101--103
Summary: g-Subunit of high molecular weight nerve growth factor (g-NGF) with established esteropeptidase activity was found to modulate epidermal growth factor (EGF) -- stimulated proliferation of L929 fibroblasts. Cell cultures exposed to g-NGF showed an increase in 3H-thymidine incorporation over the EGF-stimulated level at 1 nM of g-NGF and a decrease at 10 nM. Treatment with g-NGF also resulted in a 2.7 -- 3.5-fold elevation of 125I-EGF specific uptake. The data obtained assume that extracellular peptidases are involved in cell-cycle regulation through the modification of receptors for growth-stimulating polypeptide factors.
