Summary: A brief assessment of significance of zoological studies as related to environmental protection and biological diversity problems is presented. Research spectrum of the Institute of Zoology, National Academy of Sciences of Belarus as the body coordinating investigations of animal kingdom in the republic aimed at revealing tendencies, regularities and mechanisms transforming fauna complexes and populations of species affiliated to different ecological and taxonomic groups under the impact of industrial activities is characterized. Most promising trends of zoological advances are updated.

Distant hybridization of tetraploid Vacciniaceae species with Vaccinium vitis-idaea L. pp. 85--88

Summary: First experiments in distant hybridization of naturally isolated (Magadan region. Russia) tetraploid Vacciniuni vitis-idaea (2n = 48) with some Vacciniaceae species of the same polyploidy demonstrated fertilization potential. Evidence supporting unilateral progamic incompatibility of certain hybridization elements was obtained.

Summary: 7 year fruit-bearing dynamics of red bilberry cultivars: Erntedank, Erntekrone, Erntesegen, Koralle, Masovia was traced. Despite yield fluctuations, the latter tended to grow in all tested variants. Koralle showed the highest yield stability.

Conditions promoting potato callusogenesis in vitro. pp. 97--105

Summary: Callusogenesis was examined on functionally distinct potato tissues. The effect of hormones and bioactive agents on callus formation was analysed. Conditions favouring active proliferation and morphogenesis of callus cultures were established. Biochemical evaluation of protein and nucleic acid metabolism during callusogenesis was performed. Polypeptide electrophoresis was applied to reveal some aspects of differentiated potato tissues.

Aquatic hyphomycetes in culture. II. Dynamics of growth and production of antibiotic substances. pp. 112--115

Summary: Growth kinetics of 15 aquatic hyphomycete species on 6 agar media have been studied. The maximum growth rates coupling with development of specific morphology of colonies were achieved with Ranzoni's media and MA (2%). Radial growth rates (Kr) on MA ranged from 0,28 to 2,12 mm/day. Some correlations between kinetics of fungal biomass and changes of antibiotic activities of culture filtrates have been shown.

Identification of phytochrome-binding proteins in intracellular organelles of germinated oats. pp. 116--121

Summary: Using the new method with 125I labelled phytochrome the target-proteins for phytochrome in plant cell organelles were detected. The molecular weights of these proteins were 53, 32, 27 and 23 kDa in tonoplast, 35 and 32 kDa in mitochondria and 56, 44 and 42 kDa in chloroplasts.

Summary: The collection stock of microorganisms maintained at the Institute of Microbiology, NASB was characterized. The article presents a list of strains included in the Catalogue of microbial cultures. Data bank describing Institute collection stock was set up.

Morphological characterization of rat embryo thymuses from Chernobyl-contaminated zone. pp. 128--133

Summary: 20-day foetuses developing intrauterinally in radionuclide-contaminated area show retarded thymus genesis, changes in its cell structure, reduction of thymocyte stock and inhibition of mitotic activity.

Effect of interleukines IL-1b and IL-10 on lipid peroxidation in liver microsomes of albino rats. pp. 134--137.

Summary: Effects of interleukines IL-1b and IL-10 on lipid peroxidation (LPO) in rat liver microsomes were investigated. IL-1b stimulated LPO in liver microsomes by 15 and 120 minutes after injection. Involvement of glucocorticoid hormones in mediation of IL-lp action has been postulated Injection of IL-10 promoted LPO in liver microsomes after 120 minutes.

The impact of organic symphyses on involution of prostate gland in albino rats. pp. 138--143

Summary: Changes in intraorganic nerve structure, stroma and parenchyma tissues occur in parallel during involution of prostate gland. High structural-functional potential is retained in gland areas with intact nerve endings.

Biodegradation of phthalic acid esters. pp. 144--152.

Summary: The review has been devoted to utilization of phthalate esters by microorganisms, test animals and humans. It was found that in human and animal body phthalate esters are only partially transformed, whereas microorganisms are capable of full mineralization.

Effect of ionizing radiation on cell death in frog spleen. pp. 153--154.

Summary: Frogs under high radiation background differ significantly from the control in the number of dead cells in spleen. Under additional irradiation (2 Gy) this value in dynamics also differs significantly.
