On March 22, 2023, a delegation of scientists of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus headed by Academician Vladimir Gusakov, Chairman of the Presidium of the NAS of Belarus, honored the memory of the tragedy victims and laid flowers at the eternal flame in the Khatyn Memorial complex. The ceremony was attended by the heads of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, of scientific and public organizations, young scientists.
As Vladimir Gusakov, Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences, noted at the ceremony, today is a day of national mourning. "Belarus is the country that suffered the most from the war, took the first blow. Officially, the country has lost more than 50% of the national wealth. But in fact, the entire national economy, industry, agriculture, and other industries were destroyed. And the most tragic thing is that more than three million people died," Vladimir Gusakov said.
According to the Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences, a temporary group was working in Belarus to clarify the victims of genocide, losses in the Great Patriotic War. "And the latest data show that this is more than three million people. Our whole country is graves and monuments to the tortured, shot, burned. We must definitely remember this story and tell young people about it – that we did not rewrite, did not falsify history, we defended the truth. And the truth is our independence. This is the future," Vladimir Gusakov summed up.
In the Year of Peace and Creation, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus will continue to actively work to study the historical facts of the Great Patriotic War, perpetuate the memory of the genocide victims on Belarusian soil, expose the perpetrators of mass genocide, and carefully preserve the memory of those terrible events.
