On October 18, 2023, the National Press Center of the Republic of Belarus hosted a press conference Genetic Passport of the Residents of Belarus: Disclosure of the Genetic Nature of Longevity, Research in the Field of Genetics of Aging and Longevity. Pavel Morozik, Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the Institute of Genetics and Cytology of the NAS of Belarus, and Yelena Mikhalenko, a leading researcher at the Laboratory of Environmental Genetics and Biotechnology of the Institute of Genetics and Cytology of the NAS of Belarus, took part in the press conference on behalf of the NAS of Belarus.
Pavel Mikhailovich told why a genetic passport is needed and told about the methods of risk assessment and prevention of 19 socially significant diseases developed jointly with medical institutions of the Republic of Belarus. Yelena Mikhalenko named the factors affecting the duration and quality of life: human genetic characteristics; lifestyle; state of nature, i.e. the environment; and the social sphere, including healthcare and patient care. "But we must not forget that our lifestyle, our diet, our physical activity also affect and depend on our genetic characteristics," Yelena Petrovna noted.
Pavel Morozik also reported on the work on the coordination of a new joint project of the NAS of Belarus and the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation as part of the continuation of the union program DNA Identification. Within the framework of the second program, the geneticists of Belarus and Russia plan to study the genetic identification of plants, animals and fish, as well as the microbiome of the soil. "This program will now be approved. In addition, the Institute of Genetics and Cytology of the NAS has prepared a number of events for participation in the Virology program, which is also at the approval stage," Pavel Mikhailovich shared.
