Museum exhibition of scientific book opened at the NAS of Belarus

On January 22, 2025, the Central Scientific Library of the NAS of Belarus hosted the grand opening of the Museum Exposition of Scientific Book, timed to the Day of Belarusian Science. The exposition presents the history of scientific writing from the birth of writing to the present day, gives an idea of the methods, materials and devices for writing. In addition, it is intended to present the book as a complex phenomenon that combines elements of literature, science, technology and art, as well as an important object of material and spiritual culture.

As the Chairman of the Presidium of the NAS of Belarus Vladimir Gusakov noted at the opening ceremony, the goal was to introduce scientists and the entire Belarusian society to the wealth that is available in the Academy of Sciences and in the academic library. "A unique collection is concentrated here: a historical book, a scientific book. There is no such collection of scientific books anywhere in Belarus. Our pride is that a large part of the Radziwill Library is stored here, in our library. And in recent years, this collection has been enriched with a large number of rare scientific books. Scientists and anyone who wants to can work here, immerse in history, touch the values, see how the scientific book developed. The book is the most valuable and vivid carrier of the people's culture. Everything must be preserved, valued and preserved for future generations. This is a great value of society, the people," Vladimir Gusakov emphasized. The Chairman of the Presidium left the first entry in the book of honored guests.

The central place in the exhibition of scientific books is devoted to the book as a museum item. Visitors can get acquainted with the originals of incunabula of the 1490s, the works of outstanding Slavic scientists of the 16th–18th centuries, from polemicists to authors of textbooks on grammar, logic, and history. Among the exhibits of this period are outstanding monuments printed in printing houses in Zabluduv, Vilno, Grodno, and Suprasl. Among the authors are Simeon Polotsky, Meletius Smotritsky, Pamva Barynda, and many others.       Books in European languages are represented by lifetime editions of Erasmus of Rotterdam, Martin Luther, Denny Diderot, Kazimir Semenovich, Mikhail Lomonosov and other outstanding educators. The 19th century is reflected in richly illustrated editions with lithographs by leading book artists of the time. Visitors can get acquainted with the ideas of scientists of that period about what the most ancient fossil animals looked like, see classical treatises on botany, mathematics, physics, and agriculture.
In the Museum's exhibition of scientific books, you can also get acquainted with Belarusian academic publications from 1922 to the present day, as well as publications by the heads of the Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Institute of Belarusian Culture, starting with Stepan Nekrashevich and Vsevolod Ignatovsky.
