The 80th anniversary of the Great Victory became the main topic of the joint meeting of the Presidiums of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow

On April 8, 2025, a joint meeting of the Presidiums of Russian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus was held in Moscow, dedicated to the celebration of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. At the meeting it was noted that scientists from both countries pay special attention to the ongoing work to defend historical truth, objective scientific study of all the most complex issues of the history of the Second World War and the Great Patriotic War for a comprehensive understanding and positive perception in the historical memory of modern generations of the feat accomplished by our peoples during the war years. The main scientific part of the event focused on the analysis of the role of science in achieving Victory in the Great Patriotic War, as well as the activities of scientists during these years. Research by Belarusian historians aimed at preserving the memory of the past was presented.

The President of RAS, Academician Gennady Krasnikov proposed to pool resources to counteract the distortion of historical facts and to develop new joint programs of the Union State, Russian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus with the involvement of leading historians, archival employees and all interested parties.

In turn, the First Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the NAS of Belarus, Academician Sergei Chizhik emphasized that the interaction between Russia and the Republic of Belarus is constantly strengthening. The basis for the development of cooperation is the Union State programs, within the framework of which more than sixty scientific and technical projects have already been successfully implemented. In addition, this year the presidents of both countries signed a strategic document defining the principles for creating a single scientific and innovative space for Belarus and Russia. “Our meeting will continue the tradition of effective work on our permanent platform for a broad exchange of opinions, dialogue between scientists of our countries to develop mechanisms and methods aimed at scientific support for economic growth and sustainable development of our countries,” noted Sergei Chizhik.
The participants of the event discussed projects in protection of historical memory, as well as the contribution of scientists of the two countries to the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The report "The Military Feat of Soviet Science" was presented by the Director of S. Vavilov Institute of the History of Natural Science and Technology of RAS Roman Fando. Director of the Institute of History of the NAS of Belarus Vadim Lakiza presented a scientific report on the topic “The Great Patriotic War in the Research of Belarusian Historians”. Igor Poberezhnikov, Director of the Institute of History and Archaeology of Ural Branch of RAS, revealed the role of scientific achievements during the war years in his report “The USSR Academy of Sciences in the Service of the Fatherland: Tested by War.” Nikolai Myslivets, Director of the Institute of Sociology of the NAS of Belarus, cited the latest data from sociological research by Belarusian scientists in a report on the topic “The Great Patriotic War in the historical memory of the residents of Belarus.” The topic of the role of achievements of agricultural science during the war years was not forgotten at the meeting. Thus, Academician of RAS Vyacheslav Chernoivanov reported on the contribution of agricultural science to the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The report “Agrarian Science during the Great Patriotic War: the Feat of Belarusian Scientists” was presented by the Director of the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry of the NAS of Belarus Yuri Shashko.
During a joint meeting of the Presidiums of RAS and the NAS of Belarus, in which Deputy State Secretary of the Union State Elena Bogdan took part, the awarding of prizes of Russian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus in science to Russian scientists for outstanding scientific results obtained in the course of joint research took place. Diplomas were awarded to Belarusian scientists earlier.
Participants of the joint meeting of the Presidiums of RAS and the NAS of Belarus took part in a solemn ceremony of laying flowers at the memorial to the employees of the Presidium of the Academy who died during the Great Patriotic War.
