Vladimir Karanik met with the Governor of Russia's Kaluga Region
Vladimir Karanik, Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, held a working meeting with Vladislav Shapsha, Governor of Kaluga Region of Russia. The parties discussed deepening scientific and technical cooperation in key sectors, from mechanical engineering and agriculture to medicine and nuclear technology.
During the talks, Vladimir Karanik emphasized that close integration of the two countries' scientific potential is essential for ensuring technological sovereignty. He stated that a shared academic background and similar traditions enable Belarusian and Russian scientists to collaborate effectively, despite external challenges.
"Only by pooling our expertise will we be able to ensure sovereignty and development. We speak the same language; most of our academics come from the same school of Soviet science. We share a common view of history and similar traditions. I am confident that this cooperation—not only in science but also in practice—will benefit our economies," noted Vladimir Karanik.
The head of the Academy of Sciences also emphasized that the scientific community faces a dual task: to be closer to the real sector of the economy and simultaneously create a foundation for breakthrough developments of the future.
In turn, Kaluga Region Governor Vladislav Shapsha emphasized that the region's economic cooperation with its Belarusian partners is currently focused on qualitative growth and increasing the share of high-tech products. This is particularly relevant in the context of turbulence and external pressure.
"We've seen how quickly the situation changes when our former partners 'turn off the switch,' and we find ourselves in a vulnerable position. To prevent this, science and research institutions must work effectively, creating innovative materials and technologies that will ensure our safety from partners who have proven unreliable," said Vladislav Shapsha.
The Governor identified priority areas for further bilateral cooperation, including radiology, radiation diagnostics, the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and cooperation in the agro-industrial complex, including the production of agricultural drones and joint projects on breeding in livestock and poultry farming.
The meeting concluded with a confirmation of the parties' readiness to expand contacts. Vladimir Karanik and Vladislav Shapsha signed a cooperation agreement between the Government of Kaluga Region and the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
