A meeting of rectors of higher education institutions was held at the Academy of Sciences

A landmark meeting of the rectors of the country's higher education institutions was held at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. Key topics of discussion included the commercialization of scientific research, the transfer of university technologies to the real economy, and strengthening ties between university and academic research.

Vladimir Karanik, Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, attended the event. In his speech, he emphasized the importance of a seamless training system. He stated that the university is the launching pad where future researchers are formed. Continuity between the university and the academic laboratory enables the technology to move forward and develop.

One of the central topics of the discussion was finding a balance between fundamental research and applied results. The head of the National Academy of Sciences warned that if we demand exclusively rapid commercialization from science and scientists, we risk losing fundamental research. At the same time, switching to pure theory and addressing issues divorced from real life and the needs of the real economy is a dead end. "Therefore, there are indeed many questions here, and this issue is absolutely complex," Vladimir Karanik emphasized.

The head of the Academy of Sciences also noted that the scientific community has been tasked with ensuring compliance with the entire technological chain: from the idea and fundamental research to applied work and the release of finished products.

During the rectors' school, participants also discussed improving the work of dissertation defense councils and developing new, more effective criteria for evaluating scientific activity that would allow for the objective measurement and evaluation of scientists' real contribution to the development of the economy and society.

Summing up the discussion, Vladimir Karanik, Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, emphasized the importance of the university sector in developing scientific potential and innovative ideas that find application in industry. "Without university research, there will be no academic or industrial science," he said.
