Belarus President scholarships awarded to 16 NASB graduate students
President Alexander Lukashenko has signed an executive order No. 17рп "On awarding scholarships to graduate students". Scholarships of the President of Belarus in 2016 have been awarded to 82 graduate students. Among them are 16 representatives of scientific institutions and organizations of the NASB. These are talented young graduate students doing thesis research in priority scientific and technical areas. Many of them are holders of the certificates confirming the application of the achieved results in the manufacturing industry, clinical practice of healthcare institutions, educational process, patents for inventions and utility models or approvals for a patent. The scientific achievements of the scholarship holders will be used by enterprises, organizations and social institutions across the country. The adoption of the executive order No. 17рп is a testament of the support of talented young scientists and development of the scientific potential of Belarus.
In honor of the Science Day the first object of the Belarusian Antarctic station has been established
Before the Belarusian Science Day polar explorers established the first object of the Belarusian Antarctic station - three-section laboratory and living module. This was reported to the NASB leadership by the head of the Belarusian Antarctic Expedition Alexei Gaidashov. The personnel of BAS finished engineering activities for the commissioning of the first object of the Belarusian Antarctic station and proceeded to carry out research programs. Three-section specialized module is built to provide decent living and research conditions in the place of our expedition location in East Antarctica.

100th anniversary of the corresponding member V.I. Nefedov
On January 27, 2016 100th anniversary of the corresponding member V.I. Nefedov is celebrated (1916-1999). V.I. Nefedov is known as a specialist in drama study, playwrite, professor (1964), Honored Artist of the BSSR (1975), the BSSR State Prize laureate (1966).

Celebrations dedicated to the Belarusian Science Day will be held in the NASB
On January 29, 2016 the Republican meeting of scientific community dedicated to the Belarusian Science Day will be held in the National Academy of Sciences (66 Independence Avenue) at 16.00.
An exhibition of the achievements and the most significant results of scientific and technical and innovative activities in the Republic of Belarus will be open from 10.00 am.
In 2016 the celebrations will be held under the slogan - "Science for the Knowledge Economy".

Science has always been a powerful resource for the modernization of society, the driving force of technological progress, the most important component of national wealth. The President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko set the task of building a knowledge society. This is the key to our strategic development and broad international recognition. Today, it is a science intended to suggest ways, mechanisms and scenarios of economic transition of our country to the sixth, the highest technological way.
The NAS of Belarus held a meeting with representatives of Japan Tobacco Inc.
On January 27, 2016 the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus held a meeting with Japan Tobacco Inc. (Tokyo, Japan) delegation. The purpose of the delegation's visit - negotiations to expand the Belarusian-Japanese cooperation.
At the negotiations the NASB side was headed by the First Vice Chairman of NASB Presidium Sergei A. Chizhik.
Japan Tobacco Inc. was represented by heads and specialists from Japan, Russia and Belarus.
The visit of Korean scientific organizations delegation
On January 26, 2016 the delegation of scientific organizations of the Republic of Korea visited the NAS of Belarus. The First Vice Chairman of NASB Presidium Sergei A. Chizhik and the Chairman of the Science Policy Committee at the Korean Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning Lee Sin-Doo discussed promising areas and mechanisms of scientific and technichal cooperation. In addition, the sides discussed possible forms of bilateral communication, including the exchange of delegations of scientists of both countries. The Chairman of the Science Policy Committee at the Korean Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning Lee Sin-Doo pointed out, “The purpose of our visit to the NAS of Belarus is to define and expand the possibilities of close cooperation between scientists of the two countries in the field of practice.” The delegation of scientific organizations of the Republic of Korea visited the permanent NASB exhibition "Achievements of national science applied for production".
NASB is holding an open tender for scientific and technological projects of tasks of branch scientific and technical programs aimed at the implementation of new competitive products and technologies in the years 2016–2020
In accordance with the Regulations on the development and implementation of scientific and technical programs, approved by the resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus "On approval of regulations on the development and implementation of scientific and technical programs and repeal of certain decisions of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus and some of their provisions" of August 31, 2005 № 961, the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Belarus is holding an open tender for scientific and technological projects of tasks of branch scientific and technical programs aimed at the implementation of new competitive products and technologies in the years 2016–2020.

On January 22, 2016 grand opening of the memorial sign "The Tree of Belarusian Science" and the portraits gallery of Full Members (Academicians) and Corresponding Members of the NAS of Belarus was held in the National Academy of Sciences. The event was dedicated to the anniversary of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus foundation. The Chairman of NASB Presidium Vladimir Gusakov, appealing to the Academicians, said: “The current year will be determinative in many ways for the Academy of Sciences due to the fact that 12 new state research programs, which should act as a generator of new knowledge and a source of intellectual property in the country, are starting. For this purpose we have created a system of interdisciplinary research centers for advanced research and scientific and technological clusters, their task is to define the points of growth and development for science and technology which have the greatest potential for generation of long-term scientific and technological progress. Scientific collectives and the Academy centers under your leadership should focus on development of solutions for the creation of an integrated system and the close relationship between science, economy and society."
Delegation of Japanese company Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. visited NAS of Belarus
On January 20, 2016 the NASB leadership held negotiations with members of the delegation of the Japanese company Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. The focus was on expanding promising areas of cooperation in industry, power and mechanical engineering. In the negotiations, the Belarusian side was represented by the heads of organizations of the NASB Department of Physical-Engineering Sciences. The First Vice Chairman of the NASB Presidium Sergei Chizhik said, “Activities of the Kawasaki Heavy Industries company is a good example of how one can get good business results using science. The NAS of Belarus is ready to cooperate with the Japanese corporation on a wide range of areas.”
Belarus and Egypt Academies of Sciences signed Memorandum of Understanding
The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology of Egypt signed the Memorandum of Understanding. The event was held on the results of a visit of a NAS of Belarus delegation headed by the First Vice Chairman of the NASB Presidium Sergei Chizhik to Egypt. In Cairo Belarusian and Egyptian scientists conducted a seminar on the theme "New directions in research and innovation activities in Belarus and Egypt." The sides exchanged experience in research fields relevant for the both countries, including use of inorganic porous materials for water treatment, production of "smart" fertilizer and biosensors, molecular breeding of animals and plants, creation of agricultural machinery and equipment, Earth remote sensing and processing images from space. The delegation of Belarusian scientists also visited the Central Metallurgical Research and Development Institute and Zewail City of Science and Technology.

We have much to be proud of. This year was marked by landmark events in the life of our country and the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
Chairman of NASB Presidium Vladimir Gusakov meets Turkey Ambassador to Belarus Kezban Nilvana Darama
On December 24, 2015 Chairman of the NASB Presidium Vladimir Gusakov met Turkey Ambassador to Belarus Kezban Nilvana Darama. The focus of the meeting was on the issues related to the expansion of scientific and technical cooperation between Belarus and Turkey and possible participation of the NASB organizations in the Expo 2016 Antalya. “Belarus and Turkey must intensify their scientific-technical collaboration for the benefit of the economies of the two countries,” stressed Vladimir Gusakov at the meeting. He suggested signing a new trilateral agreement on cooperation between the NAS of Belarus, the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) and the Turkish Academy of Sciences.
Vladimir Gusakov: Belarus-US Scientific Workshop is a landmark event for our countries
On December 15, 2015 the Belarus-US Scientific Workshop opened at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
The Belarusian side is represented by a group of directors of major research and production organizations, leaders of scientific and technical projects.
Opening the workshop, Chairman of NASB Presidium Vladimir Gusakov called it “a landmark event for our academies, our scientific communities and our countries”. The NAS of Belarus expects this workshop to bring good prospects of cooperation with the American side and is open to collaboration in the entire range of areas: “We are ready to demonstrate our results, our institutes, laboratories, so that you can see that Belarusian science has made significant progress and possesses good capacities for cooperation”, said Vladimir Gusakov.
American academic delegation visiting NAS of Belarus
The delegation of representatives of the United States scientific community are visiting the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus on December 13-18. Today the American delegates met the Chairman of the Presidium, National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Vladimir Gusakov, representatives of the departments and institutes of the NAS of Belarus.
Vladimir Gusakov confirmed the intention to collaborate as equal partners with colleagues from the United States. Chairman of the Presidium noted that scientists of the two countries had already successfully implemented joint projects - in 2013 8 joint projects and in 2014 5 projects were implemented. This year a number of projects, particularly in the field of laser physics, materials, recycling, biotechnology, projects in the scope of the Botanical Garden and others, are being implemented.
Documents for cooperation between Academies of Sciences of Belarus and Turkmenistan signed
On December 10, 2015 Belarus and Turkmenistan signed the roadmap of cooperation for the years 2016-2017. The document was signed during the official visit of President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko to Turkmenistan. The document was signed by the two presidents Alexander Lukashenko and Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. In addition, the documents on cooperation in the food and light industries between the Academy of Sciences of the two countries were signed. The Agreement on scientific and technical cooperation was signed between the Center for Technology of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan and the Institute of Genetics and Cytology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. The Institute of Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan and the Institute of Chemistry of New Materials of NAS of Belarus signed the provision on a joint laboratory for the production of chemical products.
Roadmap of cooperation between the Academies of Sciences of Belarus and Vietnam signed
On November 9, 2015 Belarus and Vietnam signed a program of cooperation in economics, science, education and culture for the years 2016-2018. The document was signed during the official visit of President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The document was signed by the two presidents Alexander Lukashenko and Truong Tan Sang. Also during the visit several documents were signed on the interdepartmental level, in particular, the roadmap of cooperation between the Academies of Sciences of the two countries.
Awards for best speakers at YES-Forum
On December 4 the First Young Eurasian Scientist Forum (YES-Forum) and the annual 12th international young scientists conference “Youth in Science 2015” closed at the NAS of Belarus. NASB Chief Scientific Secretary Alexander Kilchevsky presented the best speakers of the forum with awards.
The next Young Eurasian Scientist Forum is expected to be hosted by Kazakhstan.
Lecture by Russian cosmologist Valery Rubakov “Mysteries of universe: dark matter and dark energy”
On November 13, 2015 the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus hosted a lecture by the famous Russian cosmologist Valery Rubakov. It was organized by the Science and Innovations Journal in cooperation with the Science Around Us Foundation and the NAS of Belarus. The video version of the lecture is now available, which will tell in detail about the scientist’s hypotheses on the main mystery of the 21st century fundamental physics – the nature of dark energy.
