Youth forum held on the Belarusian World: A View of Science and Orthodoxy

On June 12, 2024, the NAS of Belarus hosted the youth scientific forum on the Belarusian World: A View of Science and Orthodoxy.

The Forum is organized by the Council of Young Scientists of the NAS of Belarus, the Department of Humanities and Arts of the NAS of Belarus with the support of the Belarusian Orthodox Church and the Saints Methodius and Cyrill Institute of Theology of BSU. The event was attended by humanities scientists, theologians of Belarus, young scientists of the NAS of Belarus, Orthodox youth, students of the Saints Methodius and Cyrill Institute of Theology of BSU.

The Chairman of the Presidium of the NAS of Belarus, Academician Vladimir Gusakov and Metropolitan of Minsk and Zaslawje, Patriarchal Exarch of All Belarus Veniamin addressed the young participants of the forum with a welcoming speech.

Speaking at the Forum, Vladimir Gusakov noted: "It should be emphasized that today we are introducing into circulation such a generalizing concept for all our humanitarianism as the "Belarusian world", arguing in advance that it includes a whole system of national values, from ancient history and culture to the modern world order, including the traditional worldview of our people." The Chairman of the Presidium of the NAS noted that the historical path of Belarus has exceptional features. Firstly, he drew attention to the geographical location, which for centuries has been the crossroads of several cultures and state entities that were part of large civilizational conglomerates and determined the development of the Eurasian space. Secondly, he pointed out the peculiarities of the population of the Belarusian territories, which for centuries had absorbed representatives of different ethnic groups and nationalities into its composition. Thirdly, he drew attention to the high degree of resistance of the Belarusian people acquired over time to the destructive conditions of transit existence.

In turn, Metropolitan of Minsk and Zaslawje, Patriarchal Exarch of All Belarus Veniamin noted at the youth scientific forum on the Belarusian World: A View of Science and Orthodoxy that in these difficult times it is important to deeply rethink your past and present. "Today we live in a very difficult, dramatic, but at the same time unique time. Undoubtedly, it will end up in the history books. For every nation, it is important not only to survive such years without losing their heritage, but also to deeply rethink their past and present, as well as preserve all the best, understand which image of the future to choose for themselves and where to strive," Metropolitan Veniamin said. In this regard, it is very important to talk about values and ideals, about why a person lives, for what he develops culture and economy, the bishop noted.

The forum the Belarusian World: A View of Science and Orthodoxy discussed such topical issues as: the history of Belarusian statehood in the concept of the fundamental work History of Belarus; cooperation between the state and the Belarusian Orthodox Church: the state and prospects of development; Nation, Peace, Church: a look into our future; old printed and book heritage of Belarus; the institutional world of Belarusian philosophy: structure, dynamics, peculiarities of study; the spiritual history of Belarus as a source of formation of the worldview of modern Belarusians; the information space of the Belarusian Orthodox Church in the context of the transformation of modern society, etc.

The thematic exhibition Cyrillic Books in Belarus in the XVII–XVIII Centuries of the Central Scientific Library of the NAS of Belarus was presented at the forum.
