Alexander Vasilyevich Sukalo (b. 25.02.1951, Rogachev, Gomel region), a scientist in the field of pediatrics, pediatric nephrology and ecopathology, children's immunology. Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (2014; corresponding member since 2009), Doctor of Medical Sciences (1995), Professor (1996). Honored Scientist of the Republic of Belarus (2002). Excellence in Public Health of the USSR (1978), Excellence in Public Health of the Republic of Belarus (2012).
Scientific works are devoted to the study of the causes and the development of methods for preventing the recurrence of nephrotic syndrome in children, clinical and experimental studies of adverse environmental effects (cesium-137 and nitrites) on the occurrence, course and outcome of glomerular kidney diseases in children. Identified and described the patterns and characteristics of the course of glomerulonephritis in children of Belarus in the post-Chernobyl period. He established the facts of changes in the course and increase of unfavorable outcomes of glomerulonephritis (development of chronic renal failure) under the influence of cesium-137, nitrites and their combinations, which formed the basis of one of the sections of modern nephrology - environmental nephrology of childhood. He established new markers for predicting outcomes of primary and secondary glomerulonephritis, suggested methods for optimizing the treatment of acute and chronic renal failure, including kidney transplantation. He developed and introduced into clinical practice protocols of anti-relapse therapy of glomerulonephritis, which allowed minimizing the negative effects of pathogenetic glucocorticosteroid and cytostatic treatment of glomerulonephritis. The introduction of high-tech methods of renal replacement therapy into the medical process made it possible to reduce the mortality of children from acute renal failure from 35% to almost zero. In the field of endocrine pathology in pediatrics, has developed algorithms for the examination, prevention and treatment of children with overweight.
Author of more than 530 scientific papers.
