Anatoly Anatolyevich Kovalev (13.01.1939, Gomel – 09.03.2008), physicist. Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (1989), Doctor of Physico-Mathematical Sciences (1988), Professor (1991).
Scientific research in the field of laser physics and optical information processing. Made the first work on the study of the anisotropy of stimulated emission of lasers based on solutions of organic compounds. Investigated the effect of the spectral-luminescent properties of passive valves based on solutions of complex molecules on the lasing dynamics and radiation parameters of monopulse solid-state lasers. He proposed and substantiated effective methods of narrowing the spectrum and radiation patterns of mono- and two-pulse solid-state lasers for the purposes of optical location, holography and two-exposure holographic interferometry. He discovered new effects of phase modulation and self-modulation of radiation in liquid-crystal phototropic media, proposed and investigated a new class of controlled liquid-crystal passive gates for lasers. Investigated the properties of multichannel modulation of laser radiation in spatially integrated LCD structures that are promising for use in systems for optical processing, recording and storing information.
Author of over 220 scientific papers, incl. 1 monograph, 34 inventions.
State Prize of the USSR in 1985 for researching photorefractive and liquid crystals for optical information processing systems. State Prize of the Republic of Belarus in 1996 for the series of works "Phenomena of anisotropy in lasers and principles of polarization laser spectroscopy".
