Yuzefa Florianovna Matskevich (27.07.1911, v. Uhle, Beshenkovichi district, Vitebsk region - 24.11.2003), linguist. Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (1969). Doctor of Philological Sciences (1963). Honored Scientist of the BSSR (1978).
Organizer, leader, active participant in the studies of the linguogeographic stage in the development of modern Belarusian dialectology. She explored the dialects of the Belarusian language, their genesis, historical development, structure and contacts with the dialects of non-Slavic and Baltic languages. Editor and co-author of the books “Khrestamatyya pa belaruskay dyyalektalogii” (1962), "Dyyalektalagichny atlas belaruskay movy" (part 1-2, 1963), "Lingvistychnaya geagrafiya i grupoŭka belaruskikh gavorak" (1968-69), "Sloŭnik belaruskikh gavorak paŭnochna-zakhodnyay Belarusi i yaye pagranichcha" (vol. 1-5, 1979-1986). One of the authors of the “Leksichnaga atlasa belaruskikh narodnykh gavorak” in 5 volumes (vol. 1-5, 1993-1998).
Author of more than 90 scientific papers.
State Prize of the USSR in 1971 for participation in the complex of works on Belarusian linguogeography.
